The World Biggest Cyber Attack in History, A Massive Data Breach of (1 Billion) Chinese Citizen Data Leaked on the Dark Web 2022

The personal information of around one billion Chinese residents has been posted online in what may be the greatest data breach ever. The CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, claims that a well-known dark web forum is where this data is sold.

The resident record, which contains names, residences, national identification numbers, phone numbers, police/criminal histories, and medical records of residents from Asian countries, was compromised. The vast dataset was allegedly stolen from the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database, according to the seller, who goes by the moniker ChinaDan.

"The Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database was compromised in 2022. Many TB of data and information about billions of Chinese residents are contained in this database, according to ChinaDan. "Databases hold information on one billion Chinese citizens who live there as well as several billion case records, including name, address, birthplace, national ID number, cellphone number, and all crime/case details."

The 23 TB database is currently available for purchase on Breach Forums for 10 bitcoin, or roughly $200,000. The occurrence naturally generated anxiety and discussions on Weibo and WeChat. Since then, Weibo has outlawed the hashtag #dataleak.
Although the exact mechanism of the breach is unknown, it appears to have been more rudimentary than technically esoteric. Zhao claimed that a Chinese government developer made a mistake, which caused the leak. That's right, the biggest "hack" in history may have been caused by a developer who carelessly exposed the login information for the main database on a tech blog.

Although Wall Street Journal's Karen Hao contacted some of the victims whose data she obtained from the sample she downloaded, there are some who doubt ChainDan's assertion.
"At this time, it's impossible to determine the scope of the data leak, but five of the pick-ups confirmed all of the case information provided with their name – information that would be challenging to obtain from different platforms.
Before hanging up, the other four verified their names and other personal details. One individual groaned in despair when he learned why we had his information, citing the traditional Chinese idiom for loss of privacy, "We are all running nude."
